How To Instill Morality In Your Child

One of the many jobs you have as a parent is to teach your child morality and how to be a good person. While this may sound simple, it is far from it. Morality is complex and the process of becoming a good person is a life-long endeavor. However, there are many steps you can take to begin instilling morality into your child at an early age. Get to know some of these steps you can take and then, you can start using them in your parenting life as soon as possible.

Lead by Example

Possibly the best thing you can do to instill morality into your child starting at a young age is to lead by example. Show them what good morals look like and how a moral person lives their life. Do things that are good and caring for others.

You could, for example, volunteer at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter and bring your child along (if they are old enough). You could also tell them about your experiences volunteering and why you do so.

Help with your church or community events and have your child come along to help and observe. And, of course, do good things in your everyday life. Hold the door for people, let people merge in traffic, and otherwise show consideration and compassion for others.

Get Moral Story Books for Children

Your example is important but it is not the only way you should teach your child morals. Starting at a young age, consider reading moral story books for children. These books each have an overarching message that teaches your child a moral.

For example, one book may be about the negative ramifications of lying or cheating. Think of stories like "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" that you were likely taught as a child. These stories all had morals attached to them.

If you read a moral story book to your child every night, they will begin to pick up on the importance of certain behaviors and characteristics at a young age. Even if they are too young to fully understand the books, continue to read moral story books to them.

They will eventually become very familiar with the stories and the lessons will be ingrained in their minds. The more you do this, the better.

Now that you know a few ways to instill morality into your child, you can begin the process right away.
